![]() | MILLENNIUM TUSK - PHASE 3 |
November 1, 1999
Moving day!
This picture shows the tusk and stand packed away in the box that I used to ship it to Ontario. This time, however, it is moving to my new studio in Whitehorse.
If you look carefully, you can see the multitude of overlapping hands which will form the basis of my design. Another interesting feature is the shape of the tusk from above. It appears to be a simple curve from this angle, but in fact it is not - as Gerry Kortello found out (in the next phase) when he made a model of the tusk in clay ...
I will be carving a mammoth in relief on one of the Dawson City pendants (an upcoming Work in Progress!) and have been looking at several artists' renderings for reference material. The tusks always look different, depending on the angle from which the mammoth is viewed. I had thought that the simple curved rendering of the tusks found in many images was inaccurate, until I viewed the tusk from this angle. Reality is often quite different from what one might expect!
