TRIBUTE TO MICHIO - PHASE 2 |
February 14, 1998
Valentine's Day
This phase's image includes a variety of decisions and efforts.
The first part of the task included sketching out the divisions between the planes, esssential to the creation of a 3 dimensional effect. This step includes decisions about what will appear to be in the foreground and what will appear to be in the background.
I decided to push the rear of the moose behind the border of the antler and allow a part of the flank to show on the outside and behind the border. The lower branch was allowed to cross in front of the moose in order to give the impression that the moose is calling from within the woods. By pushing the rear legs to the back layer of antler and distinguishing the neck from the body, the multilayered effect is completed.
Moving back to the scroll saw, the borders were thinned and shaped, increasing the negative space.
Then work was begun on the body of the moose to round and position the back and legs. The legs of the moose were somewhat troublesome - a moose's front legs are a little goofy and to invent legs to go with the body from a picture is always a bit risky. Nevertheless, I'm happy with the result so far.
The weather here continues to be phenomenally warm. The Olympics have been first class so far, and very entertaining. Congratulations to all the athletes for effort and excellence! How about those Canadian snowboarders, short track speed skaters, curlers, bob sledders, hockey players and figure skaters!!!
Till next time,
Shane
