SURPRISED - START |
October 28, 1998
"A playful grizzly in soapstone...to be executed in a stylized manner with smooth surfaces and flowing lines."
Ms. Atwood sent the stone, weighing in at a neat 200lbs. It is marvelous stuff and I can't wait to begin the work. I have never carved with this medium before but am looking forward to the challenge of working in stone and in the round.
I postponed this carving until after attending the "Great Northern Arts Festival," held in Inuvik, Canada each year and drawing artists from accross the northern part of our globe. The dates for the festival this past year were July 17-26, 1998.
The Inuit are masters at the art of soapstone carving and I was eager to learn a few things first-hand from them before beginning. It was well worth the wait.
Till next time,
Shane
