Back to Main Page REST AND SING - PHASE 6

April 22, 1997

Spring, it seems, has had second thoughts. Snow has returned with freezing temperatures. However, we will soon be welcoming spring again, with warmer weather promised by those in the know.

I have chosen to treat the surface of the wolves with a stylized design. My intention with this is to give the effect of a deep winter coat of hair. This should enable the viewer who stands away from the carving an opportunity to see some shadow effect indicating depth of surface, which is lost with a shallower, more realistic rendering of the hair.

Again, my tool of choice is the SMC Moto Tool with a 1/8" straight bit, because of its flexibility. However, I also use a flexible shaft Dremel, with a sanding drum of medium grade, in order to do the preliminary smoothing and unifying of the surface. For subtle changes and refinements to the outlines of the wolves, I use the Foredom with a 1/4" straight bit.

I'm now off to finish the ravens as well as the overall surface sanding and polishing. I'm rethinking the idea of putting raven and wolf prints below - it may end up distracting from the rest of the carving ... we'll see.
