REST AND SING - PHASE 1 |
March 13, 1997
It's been a little longer than I had hoped, getting to this first update. The work below represents about 5 hours of actual carving and several times that in planning.
I resolved the problem of the flying raven with a second raven perched on another branch. It seems to make the composition flow a little better.
I have also added a third wolf, lying down and also howling. I had planned for this wolf to be in front of the left edge, which will become a tree trunk, but I think this will make the composition a little choppy and so will change this to a design where all three wolves will be situated behind the left edge.
So far I have used several books for reference, finding my wolves in an old Owl Magazine and calendar, and my ravens in the book by Candice Savage, Bird Brains. It's pretty hard to beat the professional photographers, even with the real things all around! I will also be using my own photographs and a stuffed raven (which is still waiting to be stuffed - more about that later!) for auxilliary reference material.
Tools thus far have included a drill to make the pilot holes for my Delta 16" Scroll Saw to do the interior cutting and a large, straight, single fluted burr on a Foredom H Series power tool (like a massive Dremel) to do the preliminary rough shaping.
There's lots more rough shaping to do - this is kind of the yukky stage where things have yet to take shape and the work has yet to take on a momentum and magnetism which compels the work to completion.
Until next time,
Shane
