THE SHOOTING OF DAN McGREW - PHASE 8

August 27, 2001

In this phase, the figure of Dan McGrew has been refined and fitted to a mahogany coat.

The coat is fashioned from a block of wood cut to the profile of the clay coat in the maquette. I used a small motorized chisel, some tungsten carbide Dremel burrs, and a small sanding cylinder to reduce the block to the general topography of the coat and fit of the ivory figure.

The figure has been reduced in the chest and shoulders to mesh with the coat. I have also refined the head by laying in the preliminary facial features, neck and hair line. The collar of his shirt, pocket and tie have been outlined with a small bit prior to reducing the surrounding areas.

The mahogany floor has been treated with tung oil and then waxed. It still remains to clean the cracks between the boards of the excess wax.

Fall is most definitely in the air here in Yukon as the leaves are beginning to turn colour: the oranges, yellows and reds signal an end to summer.

Take care for now,

Shane
