FARO FANNIN - PHASE 2 |
January 15, 2001
What a wonder it is to have another pair of hands helping out, expecially during some of the awkward phases. The cutting out of the negative spaces by scroll saw is generally quite awkward, especially, when the antler is large and heavy. Having Dwayne support the antler while I inserted the tiny multidirectional blades through the pre-drilled holes, meant that far fewer blades broke before they had a chance to do much cutting.
Last winter, I purchased a used 20" Delta Scroll Saw. It came with a wrenchless, quick change, upper attachment for the blade, which I had hoped would save time and effort. Perhaps we were doing something improperly, but for all our adjustments, etc., it just didn't seem to have the ability to hold the blade in place during cutting. We switched back to my trusty 16" saw and finished the job. I think I'll replace the quick change mechanism on the 20" for one that can be wrench tightened.
Prior to cutting, Dwayne mentioned that the rooted section of the carving seemed a little unbalanced, with the right portion having several runners while the left seemed bare. I agreed, so we added more to the left side. Other portions still need work, but they were not intersecting the areas we removed and so can wait for another day.
Till next time,
Shane
