DENALI - PHASE 4 |
February 14, 2000
I have begun the process of texturing the planes represented by the mountains. I have begun on the back plane on the right slab. Also, with the help of Bela, I cut away the rough edges between the two slabs. That is why the edges of the planes do not appear to meet. This will be adjusted in a later phase.
Tools used in this phase have included an angle grinder with a masonry wheel, two air hammers fitted with a pointed and flat chisel, a small electric chisel (by Bosch), and a new tool by Arbortech called the Mini-Grinder. This new tool is really a 2" extended angle grinder and works wonderfully in stone, with their diamond blade accessory. If you are interested in the tool, see the links to Arbortech and Chipping Away (Canada)on my links page. Thanks to Jim Clark for the tool suggestion. According to Jim, it also works well in antler with the tungsten carbide blade accessory. The Mini-Grinder was designed initially for woodworkers. The steel blades that come with the grinder will help any woodworker to new heights in their craft! Well done, Arbortech!
This particular stone is from the edge of the cut rock and there has been some deterioration of the quality of the stone. During the carving process, the stone can be quite crumbly - almost like hitting pockets of salty sand. This will have repercussions for the edges, so I'll just have to be careful and do my best to preserve as much of the form as possible. I have decided to finish the surface with a fine sand blasting application. Although, this may need to be rethought if the surface is too soft. We'll see.
Till next time,
Shane
