DENALI - START

This work has been commissioned by the Arctic Winter Games Committee for the Arctic Winter Games 2000 to be held in Whitehorse in March. The work is to join eight other commissions representing the nine jurisdictions attending the Games. This piece will represent Team Alaska.

After careful reflection, I have chosen to carve Denali, otherwise known as Mount McKinley. This mountain stands as the tallest peak in North America and is an Alaskan icon, appearing in many publicity shots for the state.

The commissioned work needs to be at least 30x30 inches and so I have chosen a slab of Alaskan marble. For the base I will use mahogony. (A local contractor ordered several boards and did not need them all, so I couldn't let them go to waste!)
