'Skullpture Series - Gaia, 2009' by Shane Wilson
moose antler and bronze skull sculpture
(109x122x61 cm - public collection)

'Gaia' is a carved moose antler and bronze moose skull sculpture, the last in Shane Wilson's 'Skullpture Series' for the Haines Junction Permanent Art Collection.

This moose antler carving and bronze is inspired by the Gaia theory that the earth is alive, propounded by James Lovelock. A positive future is envisaged in the symbolism of this sculpture, one in which human beings survive global climate change and become symbiotic with the earth, bringing Gaia to consciousness.
