He is best-known for his writings on the Canadian North, including the poems The Shooting of Dan McGrew, The Law of the Yukon, and The Cremation of Sam McGee.

Inspired by the North—the beauty and severity of its extremes—Canadian sculptor Shane Wilson breathes life into the discarded outer garments of arctic impermanence: antler, horn, ivory, tusk, bone; and fixes time in the most ancient of enduring alloys—bronze.

Wilson has taught the art of antler carving at Red Deer College, in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada, and continues to share his craft with artists and collectors around the World.

...After serving an apprenticeship with Shane Wilson during high school, during which he worked on 'The Shooting of Dan McGrew", Dwayne later attended northern Alberta's Keyano College, taking the Visual Art Program.

...Now on permanent loan to the McBride Museum in Whitehorse, Yukon, this commissioned sculpture from mammoth ivory and mahogany represents the last scene from the poem by Robert Service entitled, The Shooting of Dan McGrew.

This sculpture was a collaboration between Shane Wilson, who carved the mammoth ivory and mahogany figures, and Dwayne Cull, who made the mahogany furniture, including the brilliant piano with individual ivory keys, ivory sheet music and cards and the mahogany saloon floor base.

...The Wilson clan witnessed firsthand what their countrywoman Joni Mitchell was lamenting in her song, “Big Yellow Taxi”, that offers the resonant lyric: “Well, don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you got till it’s gone, they paved paradise to put up a parking lot.”

...The lesson is that Wilson, the artist, has profound empathy for those of us who long to disappear into nature whenever possible, and his art is, thus, an example of the treasure that awaits in exploration.

...Among his varied experiences, he labored on a dairy farm, became a line bottler in a brewery (for a day), served as an usher in a movie house, hustled as a door to door salesman, got hired to be an orderly in a psychiatric hospital, was a short order cook, enrolled in a military academy where he completed a year, then had a religious experience and entered a university seminary.

...After the mine re-opened, he returned to the grind and did not realize he was on the verge of reaching the place where he is today: “When the mine shut down the second time, I wrote the layoff notices for everyone—including myself,” he says.

...Indeed, as Wagner notes, it is not surprising that Wilson’s work also finds appeal in Europe, for his style of skull mounts is derivative of those that still hang in the old hunting lodges that have served, for hundreds of years, as bare yet regal celebrations of quarries that have disappeared.

...Consider his exquisite portrayals of swans, breaching humpback whales, and seahorses from antlers; his surreal, brilliantly-patinated depiction of a grizzly skull in bronze (part of an extensive, head-turning “Skullpture Series"), and the bighorn sheep wall mount that glistens as if it was chiseled from a fine gemstone.

...With an outbuilding full of material that he has meticulously gathered over the years—much the same way that Michelangelo collected special raw slabs of Carrara marble—he spends days, weeks, and months contemplating surfaces and squaring them with ideas that have been surging through his mind.

Yukon Torch Relay - Deep Creek, Lake Laberge

Ferris then passed the torch to community member Joyce Young, who carried the torch on foot and passed it onto two community youth in a horse-drawn carriage. ... As the torches traveled through communities and unique places, carried in the spirit of celebration and unity, each torch bearer, each community, each region brought its own energy to add power to this special flame.

...And now, having brought the spirit of the Games to over 80 communities, 13 unique places throughout the North and having travelled over 100,000 kilometers, we welcome the three Northern Torches of the 2007 Canada Winter Games.

...And now, arriving by Yukon dog team, from Nunavut, 9 year old Simon Tapardjuk and from the Northwest Territories, 17 year old speed skater, Rebecca Nahler.

...The Polar Bear clambers onto secure footing from an ice pan that broke into 13 pieces, again, representing all of the provinces and territories gathered here under one roof in the Yukon.

...In honour of Peter Milner, whose dream was to bring the Canada Games to the North, the Roly McLenahan Torch will be carried in by Peter's young granddaughter, Ava Milner.

Under Wilson’s deft command, antler and ivory not only fill a trophy room with ambiance and character; they flood an even larger space—the 21st century imagination—with a sense of adventure, compelling us to ponder our primitive connections to a distant past and our contemporary world.

...Wilson explores the penetrating force that antlers, horns and ivory represent as symbols of life, death and renewal in ways that are analogous to—yet distinct from—warrior totems created by West Coast First Nations bands and the tribal masks of witchdoctor and warlords, be they North American, African, Pacific island peoples or ancient Chinese.

...The Wilson clan witnessed firsthand what their countrywoman Joni Mitchell was lamenting in her song, “Big Yellow Taxi”, that offers the resonant lyric: “Well, don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you got till it’s gone, they paved paradise to put up a parking lot.”

...Among his varied experiences, he labored on a dairy farm, became a line bottler in a brewery (for a day), served as an usher in a movie house, hustled as a door to door salesman, got hired to be an orderly in a psychiatric hospital, was a short order cook, enrolled in a military academy where he completed a year, then had a religious experience and entered a university seminary.

... He adds, “But it was not until I traveled to the Yukon and northern British Columbia, on my first assignment as a student minister, that I first encountered carved antler sculpture.”

Indeed, as Wagner notes, it is not surprising that Wilson’s work also finds appeal in Europe, for his style of skull mounts is derivative of those that still hang in the old hunting lodges that have served, for hundreds of years, as bare yet regal celebrations of quarries that have disappeared.

...Consider his exquisite portrayals of swans, breaching humpback whales, and seahorses from antlers; his surreal, brilliantly-patinated depiction of a grizzly skull in bronze (part of an extensive, head-turning “Skullpture Series"), and the bighorn sheep wall mount that glistens as if it was chiseled from a fine gemstone.

CHON Interview with Shane Wilson about Sculpture Unveilings

It's been shown in various places, most recently: it has been at the Arts Centre for the past year and before that in the Westmark (Hotel) in the dining room.

...It too is an abstract sculpture but it's comprised of a set of musk ox horns that have been carved, as well as a bronze wolf skull. ... What I was trying to get at was to depict in an abstract way, the life of an artist, and I'll explain more about that tonight.

...I thought, the shape of the horns themselves, if you look at them, they're swirly and there's a huge break in the middle between the two horns. They start off with a kind of a black tip, which I imagined as birth and they broaden out into this huge, massive front, which represents getting close to middle age.

...That's what came to mind when I was looking at the musk ox horns and what I have tried to represent in an abstract way.

...There is another sculpture unveiling in Haines Junction on Saturday and I'll have that sculpture available tonight at the Arts Centre.

...This sculpture is actually the fifteenth piece in a series of bronze sculptures that have been donated to the Haines Junction Permanent Art Collection.

'Gaia, 2009' Unveiled in Haines Junction

She called me in June and she said, "We're having this commemoration of our 25th anniversary of our incorporation and wouldn't it be nice if you could have that final sculpture done for us to put in that case!"

...Now I was doing something else at the time, but she inspired me to think that it was possible to make a living - to be an artist and I'd like to thank her.

...So when I first started this sculpture, I followed the veins to get these shapes and the one on this side (left) was curvy and swirly and the one on this side (right) did have angley kind of veins.

...He has a lot of things to say, but essentially, his hope is that humans don't die off, because they (we) are the first evidence of self consciousness on the planet. He sees that, if we survive, we can use our technologies, ideas and traditions to evolve into a state where we are able to be symbiotic with the earth, to become the consciousness of Gaia.

...You've got what could be an abstract bookshelf, which to me, symbolizes all of our learning, all of our culture, all of our technology which is stored and we have access to all of it.

...So we have the unique ability for perhaps the first time ever in the human history of civilization to communicate across all cultures, all peoples and all space, so we can really use our energy and work together.

...So that's pretty heavy and pretty far out but essentially that was kind of going through my mind as a way of trying to explain what was happening in the piece

...I left some of the raw horn, though I polished it up, but it's basically what the actual surface of the horn looks like, because in life there are always those things you aren't proud of, the dross of life. You know when a glacier goes down (the mountain) it throws out rocks to the side, well these (parts of the sculpture) are kind of the lateral moraines of life, represented by the raw horn and the real stuff is in the middle.

...The other thing about your bones is that they study peoples' bones to see about their life, what they ate and how they lived, so you can see the abstract stuff that's built into the bones as well (evidence of life as an artist).

...I had an actual wolf skull and I took a mold off the wolf skull and I poured wax into the mold and I carved the wax and sent the wax to the foundry. The foundry turned it into bronze, sent it back to me then I carved it up a bit better and put the patina on.

...The whole premise is that the earth is a living organism, it can self regulate, and at this point we (humans) are a bit like a virus and the earth is going to heat up in order to kill us off and then it will cool back down, over hundreds of thousands of years. ... The essential point is that it is meant to be a representation of, perhaps, the earth of the future when we are a conscious partner living in a symbiotic relationship with the earth.

In Whitehorse, November 18 at 7:00PM at the Yukon Arts Centre Gallery, 'Self Portrait' by Shane Wilson will be unveiled. Two years in the making, 'Self Portrait' is a sculpture created from carved musk ox horns, a carved bronze wolf skull, resting on a jade base. 'Self Portrait' will be donated jointly by Earl Bennett and Shane Wilson, in full, to the Yukon Arts Centre Permanent Art Collection.

In Haines Junction, November 21, starting at 5:00PM, 'Gaia: A Moose Skullpture' by Shane Wilson will be unveiled. 'Gaia' is a large bronze and antler sculpture created for the Haines Junction Permanent Art Collection and will be donated in full by the artist.

...But you know, thanks to the headline news, thanks to the good work of the RCMP and certainly an individual in particular who made and anonymous call, we have been able to recover this particular piece and we are so grateful and so thankful for that!

...So thanks to the good work of the Department of Tourism and Culture, certainly our Museums' Conservator who on this particular piece of work from the summer and over the course of the last few months has done an incredible job and we're grateful for their work and their perseverance in making it happen.

...So although this beautiful piece of work still bears a little bit of evidence of its mistreatment following the theft itself, I think that it will forever remain, truly, a piece of invaluable artwork and that which makes us all very proud to call the Yukon our home.

...I have to say that because of this episode, unfortunately it did happen, but because of it I very much believe that the story of its theft and its recovery in itself even heightens more awareness and even more attention to this particular piece and hopefully it will heighten Yukoners and residents and certainly all visitors to come and take a look at this wonderful piece of artwork.

...To the City of Whitehorse, Mayor Buckway is with us, to the RCMP, I thank you very much for sharing in the success story of this particular piece, "Yukon Seasons", in its recovery and restoration. ... And certainly to Shane Wilson, congratulations to you on seeing your work once again on display at the Canada Games Centre, which we see all around us is a well travelled building and facility that every Yukoner and beyond has grown to enjoy and appreciate over the years.

...But yes indeed, you know we do have events in our town that are not the most pleasant events and not the ones we like to talk about too much, but here's another example of where the community has come together with various orders of government and hard work by a lot of people and we have this wonderful sculpture back in the Canada Games Centre where we really feel it belongs.

...The government is very pleased that the artwork entitled "Yukon Seasons" is back on public display at the Canada Games Centre, Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor said today.

...The Department of Tourism and Culture's museums conservator cleaned the artwork to remove mould, reduce stains and re-attach an antler tine broken during the theft.

"To have this piece lost and then found again is fortunate for all Yukoners, and we are pleased to have it on public display once again," Taylor said.

"We thank the individual who initially worked with local law enforcement officers to recover the carving, which in turn has led to this important day of unveiling."

Attending Tuesday evening's unveiling, Wilson said, "It gives me the greatest pleasure as the creator of "Yukon Seasons" to see it returned to its former home in the Canada Games Centre.

"I express my warmest regards and infinite gratitude to the many fine people and organizations involved in the work of recovering and restoring both the sculpture and its showcase.

And then it was unveiled and we just had a chance to see the lovely work that had been done in restoring it.

...It is actually quite a marvelous feeling to know that it's back, that the Yukon people can see it again and that the intention to, in fact, honour Ruth McCullough, from the former Arts Branch can also be honoured and I had a chance to say a few words about that.

...There was some damage that couldn't be repaired, the very tip of the nose had been chewed a little bit, but all of the discolouration has been reduced considerably, so you don't even notice that it's been discoloured.

Yukon's Art Curator, Heather Leduc, has been following the piece since it was stolen. She says they're not sure how long it will take to restore the sculpture, but the plan is to have it back on public display.

...Actually, it's interesting, I think the committee was a little concerned about how the community would take the fact that these were carved skulls, albeit cast in bronze. ... So what I decided to do, in order to continue to work with this form that I love, was to cast skulls that couldn't otherwise be carved, create wax replicas of them, cast them in bronze and in this particular case I actually carved the bronze as I would carve the bone or the antler itself.

...First, can you describe the damage that happened to these antlers because as they were being stolen from the Games Centre a piece was actually chipped off?

...Well I'd love to do that but first I've really go to say thank you to CBC Radio and to Susan Stanley especially, because she kept following this story and kept it alive. And I really think that because of her persistence all kinds of things came into play, the Art Loss Register in New York and so forth, and ultimately the piece was turned in and recovered, so I'm very greatful to CBC, so thank you!

...They've been damaged, there's some wear and tear on the upper surface where the carving is: a little mould growth, yellowing, the big lower tine that broke off during the robbery changed the shape of the antler just slightly so that it won't be able to put it back on exactly as it came off.

...It won't be a perfect fix, but it will be there on display and people can see it and it will become part of the story of the piece itself.

“Oh wow, I think it beared up pretty well, for heaven’s sake,” said Wilson after laying eyes on the much-loved carving he donated to the Yukon’s Permanent Art Collection in 2006.

...During the robbery a portion of one antler snapped off and until the sculpture was returned, that piece - kept as evidence by police - was all that remained of Wilson’s work.

...After its theft, appeals from the public for the artwork’s safe return led to it being left anonymously in front of the Whitehorse RCMP detachment in April of this year.

...Speaking with reporters, the artist, who now resides in Nanaimo B.C., related how he had to redesign the piece during its creation after his dog chewed off part of the antler.

...“This is part of the sculpture’s journey so it’s kind of cool to see that because normally an artist doesn’t get a chance as these things tend to happen long after one’s dead.”

...“I think it was a really good place for it and it’s a popular piece,” she said, adding some discussion with the city will take place to determine security considerations to prevent a similar incident.

...But you know, I think with the amazing coverage that the CBC, with special thanks to Susan Stanley, the Facebook coverage, the newspapers and the national coverage, including the bringing in of the Art Loss Register from New York, I think that the thieves, if they had any sort of hopes of selling this piece anywhere, those hopes would probably have been discouraged if not dashed.

...In 2006 I donated the piece to the Yukon Permanent Art Collection along with its case and they decided they would like to display it at the Canada Games Centre.

...From what Laurel has indicated, and I think she is tentative because she wants the conservator to have a look at it, she said that the colour seems to be a little darker than it was originally. ... So there is some speculation that maybe it was stored in a shed or maybe it was in someone's house where there was a lot of smoking going on, I don't know.

...The police will follow the natural course of justice and that's to be expected but, truly, I'm just overwhelmingly thrilled it's recovered and it can be put back on display again and that the folks in the Yukon and visitors to the Territory can enjoy it as they can with all the other pieces of art in the Canada Games Centre.

...I think that the tentative plan is to restore it, or at least to fix it, to attach the tine that was broken off and to fix the case and put it back on display.

...That's Shane Wilson, the sculptor of 'Yukon Seasons' that was stolen last September in Whitehorse from the Canada Games Centre and now it's returned.

A lot of the mold and dirt turned out to be loose, so it came off really easily and I've been able to reduce a lot of the stains.

...There's still a tiny bit of stain underneath some of the areas that looked moldy, but I really was concerned that when I brushed it there would be really black staining underneath.

...But what I have been doing is to create a more coherent appearance, so that when you look at it your eyes aren't immediately drawn to black stains.

...Oh yes, I've been e-mailing with him and also he has been seeing some images: details, befores and afters on some of the most stained areas, so he definitely has an idea of how much it has changed.

...I have a large standing microscope, the kind that's used for cleaning your teeth or surgery, and that's been very helpful for me so I can really control my cleaning action.

But getting it in between the moose antlers safely and being able to use it to see all the places I needed to see has been a bit of a challenge. There have been times when the moose antler tines of this moose skull and rack have had little bumpers of foam over the tips so that as I carefully guided my microscope through them there would be no bumping.

I think it's quite minimal for an object that combines fragility with weight and which would be tricky to transport, even when not being stolen.

...It has been suggested that it was exposed to cigarette or wood smoke over the winter, but I actually don't believe this was the case. There is no smell of either substance associated with the piece and it is not particularly dusty ... wood stoves and people (smokers or not) produce lots of fine dust. ... I actually wonder if it was stored outside, and/or in an outbuilding and if the darkening relates to some combination of light exposure, microbial growth and exposure to high humidity or even standing water.

...I'm curious to know about how the skull and rack were initially cleaned and if they were coated at any point during your work (and with what, if anything). I'm trying to figure out if some of the darkening is the response of a coating, or remnant grease/oils to months spent in a new and very different environment.

...It was left at the scene of the crime and has been in the RCMP's keeping, so it's actually the colour and the condition that the original piece was in.

...First off we're going to simply remove the mold from the surface and then we'll gauge whether it still looks discoloured and whether that's bothersome. We may not have to do anything after that in terms of the surface colouration, but we will be looking at reattaching the broken tine area with an adhesive.

...And despite what happened in September, the sculpture's creator has no trepidation about his piece being made available again for public viewing.

The upper surfaces of the moose antler are darkened a bit and it seems to have gotten a little bit wet at some point because there has been some mold growth to the surface.

...Certainly we may try to change the surface colour in the very moldy areas to try to bring it back to a more consistent look, simply so that we avoid a spotty appearance.

...Some people have claimed that it is enzymes in saliva that make it work so well, but I've seen recent research that suggest its combination of polarity and relatively high surface tension are also important as they greatly improve its wetting power, pulling dirt and stain materials out of surfaces more efficiently.

...The snot tape residues on the mount and on edges of the antler are currently black ... not surprising since it is still really sticky and both the mount and the sculpture have been much handled and stored in dusty places. However, these very black snot tape residues have led me to wonder whether two similarly very black areas under the base of the skull are not mould, as I originally assumed, but actually more snot tape residues. If these areas were still sticky when the sculpture was stolen, it would make sense that they would now have thick layers of black grime covering them.

...The black grime under the skull is coming off, it is not visible anyway, but it would be nice to be able to say that it is not mould, if it isn't. The dark spots which brushed off the antler tines really were mould and, until I noticed the residues on the mount, I just assumed that what was under the skull was the same, but with much heavier growth.

...I'm getting an opinion on the long-term durability of the snot tape from my colleagues at the Canadian Conservation Institute and the type of commercial product you use will help them fine-tune their comments.

"Yukon Seasons" Restoration - Phase 3 Response - by Shane Wilson, Sculptor

I am not sure which variety it was. ...This means that while you may be using Scapa 4450 snot tape now, the stuff you got from the film crew for Yukon Seasons must have been a different brand.

...This means that the qualities that make this snot tape so nice for temporary use, its flexibility and extreme stickiness, are exactly the qualities that it will loose as it ages.

...So, Scapa 4450 (and similar snot tape formulations) should be stronger than the tape used on Yukon Seasons and may be more stable over time. ... Regardless of the formulation, snot tape was not designed for use as a structural adhesive, so lack of shear strength and adhesive migration are likely to be a problem even with the better quality tapes.

...The stability of snot tape is not the only one reason we are currently re-working the way in which Yukon Seasons is secured to its mount.

...There was a great deal of force used to break the tine away from the main antler, but if I try to force the piece back in, I will undoubtedly cause new breaks, including some to carved areas. If I leave the detached piece the way it is, the two parts will only be touching on small points and any repair will be weak and unsightly.

...Now they say that the Whitehorse Detachment of the RCMP said that a few days ago it had been brought in by an anonymous person, someone who was not involved with the theft.

...From what I understand, what Laurel says, the sculpture ... at the time it was stolen, the thieves, when they were breaking it out of the display case, broke off one of the tines, which are the pointy bits of the moose antler, and it was left behind ... and as far as Laurel can see that's all the damage that's been done, other than that it's intact.

She say it seems to be a little bit of a darker colour, which means that maybe it was in a house where there was woodsmoke or cigarette smoke or maybe in a shed somewhere, I don't know.

...In order to help your listeners understand, it was a carved moose antler and skull set which, if you know anything about moose, they're the largest land animal in the Yukon, they're huge, and the carving of it took about three years of my life. The intention was to have it displayed in perpetuity in the Yukon and that hope was dashed when the thief took off with it.

...In order to understand, it's about four feet high, but four feet wide by two feet deep and it a full moose antler and skull combination, in taxidermy terms it's called a European mount, so the skull and antlers are all together.

...Personally, I'm just thrilled that it's back, I mean, as an artist, when you create something, you put everything into it, you put yourself into it, and so it's like a part of me has come back.

'Yukon Seasons' Registered with the Art Loss Register - CBC Feature Interview with Christopher A. ...The theft took place during a major power outage in the southern Yukon; one of several outages over the last few months. ... The theft of this art piece shows how vulnerable parts of the city can be when there is not a reliable source of power.

...And so what the staff and management have decided to do here now is sit down and take a good hard look at that unit and try and figure out what we can do to improve the reliability.

...Meanwhile the Canada Games Centre staff is also taking a long, hard look at its operations to see what can be done to improve security during a power outage.

At the same time, he noted the theft is a bit of a strange, and unwanted, compliment, given that the thieves took nothing else from the sports complex.

...When more staff members arrived at the complex later Saturday morning, they discovered a section of glass to the right side of the inside door had been broken and the moose antler sculpture on the second floor, between the multi-purpose room and Physio Plus, had been taken.

..."It wasn't an act of vandalism," Rapp said, pointing out there was no other damage to the building and nothing else was stolen.

...Both Rapp and Mayor Bev Buckway said in separate interviews the city will be reviewing its safety procedures and looking at ways to prevent such a theft from happening again.

...While the city looks at whether it may need to change its security procedures a the Games centre, Buckway and Rapp are also hopeful the RCMP investigation into the case will be successful.

...The name of the work is 'Yukon Seasons' and many people, of course, here and in the Yukon, have seen the massive moose antlers on display at the Games Centre, but for those who haven't, can you describe it for us?

...On one side, there's winter, with snowflakes carved around the edge and trees with snow on them and a moose with a wolf engaged in circle, where the wolf tries to get behind the moose and the moose is looking at the wolf - the sort of thing that happens in the wintertime.

...I guess it would be difficult too if somebody considered that they want to sell it on the black market of art, because it is so unique and obvious to be identified.

...Every antler carving is unique, there's no question about that, because of the shapes of the antlers they are never the same, but there's nothing else like this out there.

...I suppose, as you say, the adagio 'you know you've arrived when someone steals your work' and as you say it is somewhat of a backhanded compliment to you, although on the other hand, it has robbed the people in the Yukon of the opportunity to see it and appreciated it.

...Well of course, it was tongue in cheek saying that but in my opinion, personally, it is a tremendous loss to the Yukon and the art collection and I'd like to see it recovered, if possible.

...I say and as you are obviously aware it's kind of difficult to hide a piece of work like this.
