The Torch Challenge was delayed when bad weather in Inuvik made it impossible to fly the torch to Ivvavik National Park. The lighting of the torch finally took place August 20, 2006 when rafts carrying the torch were launched down the Firth River. The first day of travel took the torch to the Anticline campsite where the carriers rested up in preparation for the Big Bend Rollercoaster rapids – the highlight of the challenge.

The journey stalled at another set of the rapids, the Caribou Fence rapids, where the water was too high and fast. After waiting for the water level to lower, a helicopter finally took the torch back to Sheep Creek, then a twin otter aircraft took the torch back to Inuvik. Although the weather and elements made things difficult, this challenge was still considered a great success. “I think it’s great to see such a nationally significant event being held in the North,” said Jeffrey Peter of Old Crow.

En raison de mauvaises conditions climatiques, le Défi du flambeau a été remis à plus tard puisqu’il était impossible de le transporter par avion jusqu’au parc national Ivvavik. Le flambeau a pu être allumé le 20 août 2006 avant que des radeaux pneumatiques ne l’emportent sur la rivière Firth. Après une journée de navigation, l’équipe s’est arrêtée au site de camping d’Anticline afin de se reposer un peu avant d’affronter les rapides Big Bend Rollercoaster, le point culminant du défi. L’équipe a dû s’arrêter une fois de plus avant d’atteindre les rapides Caribou Fence, l’eau étant trop haute et tumultueuse. Un hélicoptère a finalement dû aller chercher le flambeau pour le ramener à Sheep Creek; il a ensuite été transporté à bord d’un Twin Otter jusqu’à Inuvik. Malgré les obstacles, ce Défi du flambeau a tout de même été un véritable succès. « Il est merveilleux qu’une manifestation d’importance nationale se déroule dans le Nord » a déclaré Jeffrey Peter, 23 ans, de Old Crow.
