SUMMER SCHOOL OF THE VISUAL ARTS

INTRODUCTION TO ANTLER CARVING

July 26-30, 2004
Red Deer, Alberta, Canada

Students: Tony Atkins, Raymond Campeau, Alicia Demchuk, Lynn Holroyd, Laura Hutchinson-MacLean, Marjorie Larson, Brenda MacLean, Jim Oscarson, Len Tenpas

I was very pleased to offer a course in antler carving during Series for the first time this year. The students, administration and support staff were terrific, making for a successful first run for everyone. Some great suggestions came from the group for future courses, which will be implemented next year by offering two, one-week courses at the basic and intermediate levels.

This course included a brief survey of antler carving on the web, an introduction to the properties of antler as an artistic medium, tools, design considerations, techniques, finishing and mounting strategies, and some marketing suggestions.

Thanks to Red Deer College Series and the students, for their patience, good will and hard work during the course.

Good luck to those who plan to finish their carvings at home. Please don't hesitate to write with questions and send pics of your finished work. :)

See you next year and happy carving!

Shane
